Jamu (Indonesian Turmeric Ginger Drink)


Description

A bright, refreshing drink combining turmeric and ginger, known for its energizing and wellness benefits.


Ingredients

  • 1 large hand of fresh turmeric, scrubbed and sliced thin
  • 1 large thumb of fresh ginger, scrubbed and sliced thin
  • 3 to 4 cups water
  • Juice of 1 to 2 limes or lemons
  • 1 to 2 tablespoons honey or maple syrup, to taste
  • Pinch of black pepper
  • Optional: a small pinch of cinnamon or a few cloves

Instructions

  1. Add sliced turmeric and ginger to a small pot with water. Bring to a gentle boil, then reduce to a low simmer.
  2. Simmer uncovered for 15 to 20 minutes until the water turns a deep golden color.
  3. Strain into a heat-safe jar. Stir in citrus juice, sweetener, and a pinch of black pepper.
  4. Taste and adjust; add more water or citrus to your preference.
  5. Serve warm or chilled over ice.

Notes

Store Jamu in a sealed jar in the fridge for up to 3 days. Shake before pouring.
